China Orphan Outreach

The China Orphan Outreach programme began in 2005.  It was initiated by MedArt volunteers with the intent of reaching out to orphaned young children in China who required medical care and support for serious and complicated conditions.

Our volunteer specialists have expertise in the fields of anaesthesia, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics and urology, and have treated a wide range of serious neurological, intestinal and urological conditions.

Under the programme, medical professionals and specialists in Hong Kong and China work with orphanages and hospitals on a voluntary and free basis.  Currently, we work with the Suzhou Children’s Hospital, the Xuanwu Hospital (Beijing), the New Hope Foundation ( Beijing), the Jiaozuo Special Care Unit and the Luoyang Special Care Unit (Henan).  The programme also relies heavily upon the support of the Matilda Children’s Foundation.

The founding principle was to make available the skills and expertise required to treat complex medical conditions.  Orphaned children with less urgent problem and bigger problems were treated in Hong Kong arrange thru MedArt’s China Orphan Outreach programme which provides medical assessment, treatment and follow-up.  Urgent surgeries were performed at Suzhou, working with the Suzhou Children’s Hospital, which provided medical facilities necessary for our doctors to perform assessment and treatment at a minimal cost.  Other volunteers provide nursing and palliative care, as well as the logistical support required for this work to be performed in China or Hong Kong.  In addition, volunteers maintain contact with those who have received treatment to ensure that their treatment has been successful.
